Katavi in August: the busiest month, still nearly empty
August is Katavi's peak by every measure the park keeps: the most visitors of any month, the hardest camps to book, and hippo concentrations building fast toward the pools that will hold them through September. Even at its busiest, though, that peak means a few hundred people across an entire national park for the whole month.

August is the busiest month Katavi has, with 295 international visitors recorded in 2024, more than any other month that year. Book six months or more ahead for the small camps, since demand outstrips the handful of beds available faster here than almost anywhere else.
Peak concentration, arriving early
August recorded 295 international visitors in 2024, the highest of any month that year, out of a park total of 1,338 for the whole twelve months. In Katavi terms that is still a handful of vehicles spread across a landscape most parks would consider empty, but it is enough to noticeably tighten availability at camps with only six or so tents each.
The wildlife matches the demand. Buffalo herds over a thousand strong are now a routine sight on the Katisunga and Chada plains, and the Katuma's pools are tightening toward the density that will define September, with hippo numbers building fast toward the hundreds that pack in later.
A full schedule, a fuller inbox
Safari Air Link's scheduled flights run at their most reliable this month, mid-way through the June-to-October window, so the transport side of an August trip is the easy part. Chada Katavi holds its $1,190 July-to-October rate through August, and Katavi Wildlife Camp does the same at $575, so pricing does not spike further this month; it is availability, not cost, that becomes the obstacle.
With camps this small, six tents at Chada Katavi and six suites at Katavi Wildlife Camp, August fills from the top down, and the most sought-after rooms go first regardless of what the rest of the camp still shows as open.
One thing to do differently
Book your specific camp and room type as early as you can, ideally six to twelve months out, rather than assuming Katavi's general remoteness will keep beds open at short notice. Ask directly about August availability at the moment you start planning, since this is the one month where the park's tiny capacity, not its accessibility, decides whether your trip happens on the dates you want.
