October is the payoff month, the point where everything the dry season has been building toward is fully in place: the Katuma reduced to its last pools, crocodiles in their riverbank caves, and the biggest herds of the year converging on what water remains. It also runs hotter than any other month on the calendar, and the last scheduled flights of the season leave before it ends.

October is the driest month by the practical measure that matters here, the state of the water, even though a small 16 mm of rain falls across three days by the long-run average, an early hint of the wet season still two months off. What has not eased is the concentration effect: hippos pack tight into the last pools, and crocodiles remain in their riverbank caves through this second of the two months your guide can reliably find them.
Buffalo herds and the predators that follow them are at their most visible of the year, converging on the shrinking water because there is genuinely nowhere else to go. October drew 260 international visitors in 2024, the second-highest month behind August, and the numbers reflect a park at the peak of what it does best.
The hottest month, and the last scheduled flight
Day temperatures average 34.4°C in October, the highest of Katavi's calendar, so the heat management that mattered in September matters even more here. Chada Katavi and Katavi Wildlife Camp both hold their July-to-October rates through the month, so pricing does not change from September, only the crowds thin slightly as some travellers avoid the peak heat.
Safari Air Link's scheduled western-circuit timetable runs its last fixed departures of the season on 31 October, after which the route reverts to on-request charters only until the following June. If a scheduled flight matters to your plans, October is the final month it is guaranteed.

If you want to see the crocodile caves specifically, ask for them by name when you book your activities; this is your last reliable month for it before the behaviour becomes harder to find as the rains approach. Book your flight as a scheduled seat rather than waiting, since the shift to charter-only service begins the moment November starts.
