Best time to visit Katavi National Park
Katavi runs on one mechanism: the Katuma River dries up. From June the floodplains drain, the pools shrink and the game concentrates; by August to October the spectacle peaks. From March to May every camp in the park is closed. Here is the full calendar, backed by official visitor data.
If you only want the answer
June to September, and the two halves of it are not the same trip. The bush thins out and the game walks to water, but September averages 33.4 degrees in the afternoon. Early in the window you are more comfortable, late in it you see more.

Why the dry season is everything here
Katavi's floodplains flood. In the rains, the Katuma spreads across the Katisunga and Chada grasslands, the seasonal lakes fill, the game disperses and the black cotton soil swallows vehicles, which is why the camps simply close from March to May. Then the river stops flowing, the plains dry to grass, and everything that drinks is pulled to a shrinking chain of pools.
That is when Katavi becomes Katavi: hundreds of hippos in single pools, buffalo herds over a thousand strong crossing the plains, lions waiting at the water. The official visitor numbers confirm the shape of the season better than any brochure: of Katavi's 1,338 international visitors in 2024, August brought 295 and October 260, while April brought exactly ten.
Practical notes
- Camp closures are universal from March to May: Chada Katavi and Mbali Mbali Katavi close March to May, and Katavi Wildlife Camp runs June to the end of February.
- Scheduled flights follow the same rhythm: Safari Air Link's western circuit operates 1 June to 31 October and on request 1 November to 28 February.
- Birders face a trade-off: migrants are present November to April, which overlaps the closures. June and November are the practical windows that combine open camps with strong birding.
- Conservation fees are flat year-round; Katavi has no peak or low season pricing at the gate.
