What a visit to Katavi actually costs

Budget one: self-drive camping, for those already crossing western Tanzania

This is the trip for people already on a Mbeya-Sumbawanga-Mpanda or Tabora-Mpanda route with their own 4x4, adding Katavi to a bigger journey rather than flying in specifically for it. The fee basis is TANAPA's official 2023/24 tariff sheet, which is still the current published schedule in 2026, plus the 18% VAT that TANAPA adds at the gate: the $30 conservation fee becomes $35.40, the $40 vehicle fee becomes $47.20, and the $30 public campsite rate becomes $35.40 per person per night.

We count three fee-days for three nights, the same way a permit runs for 24 hours from entry. If the gate counts your departure day as a fourth day, add $70.80 in conservation fee and $47.20 in vehicle fee for two people.

This assumes a foreign-registered vehicle under 2,000 kg. TANAPA prices vehicles by gross vehicle mass, not curb weight, and many safari-spec double-cab 4x4s sit above that line, which moves the fee to $150 plus VAT, more than three times as much. Check your logbook before you budget. There is no fuel, food or drinking water inside the park; Mpanda is the last reliable stop for all three, and off-road driving is restricted to protect the floodplains, so build in slow going.

Budget two: the cheapest full-service camp, before you've worked out how to get there

Katavi Wildlife Camp is the obvious mid-range anchor because it is the park's best-value permanent camp with an actual published rate: $445 per person per night in June, November to 23 December, and January to February, rising to $575 from July to October, on a Full Board Plus basis that the operator says includes select activities (checked July 2026). Mbali Mbali Katavi Lodge sits in a similar bracket, roughly $500 to $690 per person per night, but the operator does not publish a standalone rate, since it sells mostly inside Katavi-Mahale fly-in packages, so we anchor the numbers on the camp that quotes a real figure.

Sleeping at any private lodge inside the park adds a hotel concession fee, $30 plus VAT per person per night, on top of the same conservation fee a camper pays. That is $70.80 a day for two people in government charges before the room rate even starts. This budget covers accommodation and fees only. Every camp in Katavi, including this one, is built around fly-in arrival, so the cost of actually getting there sits in Budget three.

July to October pushes the same three nights to $3,874.80, since the camp's rate rises to $575 per person per night in that window. "Select activities" is the operator's own phrase and is not itemised; named extras on TANAPA's own tariff, such as the $50 per person night game drive, can still be billed separately. Confirm exactly what is and is not included before you book.

Budget three: the fly-in reality, how almost everyone actually visits

Safari Air Link runs the only scheduled service into Katavi, on its western circuit every Monday and Thursday: Ruaha at 07:00, Katavi at 08:40 to 08:50, continuing to Mahale, with the return touching Katavi again around 10:30 to 10:40 before landing back at Ruaha near midday. The circuit operates on that schedule from 1 June to 31 October and on request from 1 November to 28 February. The published one-way fare is $615 plus $10 tax, so a round trip for two people comes to $2,500.

Add that to Budget two's camp-and-fees total and three nights at Katavi Wildlife Camp, flown in and out through Ruaha, comes to about $5,595. That is the number that describes how almost everyone actually experiences this park: none of Katavi's tented camps are set up for casual self-drive arrivals, and the flight schedule itself, two days a week, is often the real constraint on when you can go at all.

Most itineraries extend the same flight onward to Mahale for the chimpanzees, at a published $510 plus $10 tax one way, but that leg requires a minimum of four passengers to operate as scheduled. Two people travelling alone may need to wait for others to book the same date or ask about a charter supplement; confirm with Safari Air Link before you build a Katavi-Mahale combination around it. We could not verify any separate scheduled carrier operating this route under a name like Nomad Tanganyika in 2026; Safari Air Link's own published timetable is the only confirmed scheduled service, so treat any other airline name on this route as unverified until the operator confirms it directly.

This is Ruaha in and out. Coming from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Nyerere instead means routing through Ruaha on the same circuit at a higher published fare; there is no direct scheduled flight from Arusha to Katavi despite what some itineraries claim. Baggage is capped at 23 kg per passenger including hand luggage, soft duffel bags only, no hard-shell or wheeled suitcases.

The fuel maths, dated

EWURA's cap prices effective Wednesday 2 September 2026 put diesel at 4,040 TSh per litre in Mbeya and 4,044 TSh per litre in Tabora, both essentially identical, and 4,095 TSh per litre in Mpanda, the last reliable pump before the park. At the mid-September 2026 mid-market rate of roughly 2,645 TSh to the dollar, that is about $1.53 a litre in Mbeya or Tabora and about $1.55 in Mpanda.

Our estimate assumes about 800 km of total driving: roughly 590 to 740 km from Mbeya to the Sitalike gate area, using TANAPA's own cited range for the Mbeya-Sumbawanga-Mpanda route plus the last stretch to Sitalike, and around 150 km of in-park circuit over three days, kept modest because off-road driving is restricted to protect Katavi's floodplains. A loaded 4x4 on gravel, sand and possible black cotton soil runs at roughly 17 litres per 100 km, which is 136 litres, or about $208 filling up in Mbeya or Tabora. Filling up in Mpanda instead costs about $2 more for the same 136 litres. Either way, fill the tank and any jerry cans completely before you leave; there is no fuel of any kind inside the park.

Paying at the gate

Katavi's gates are cashless. Pay through the Government Electronic Payment Gateway: Visa or Mastercard, or Tanzanian mobile money. Do not plan on using cash, and bring a card that actually works internationally; this is the opposite of the cash-only norm at many parks elsewhere in the region.

TANAPA campsites, the Katavi Rest House and special or fly campsites book through TANAPA's own online reservation system at reservations.tanzaniaparks.go.tz. Private camps and lodges book directly with the operator. Bring your passport; ID is mandatory when buying permits. Fees are non-refundable once paid, and Katavi runs one flat rate year-round with no peak or low season split on the government side, unlike the camps themselves.

Where the money surprises people

• TANAPA's own Katavi webpage currently lists $70 per adult per day, not the $35.40 the official tariff sheet gives once VAT is added. The same $70 figure repeats word for word on four other park pages, which reads as copied Serengeti pricing rather than a Katavi-specific number. Budget the tariff sheet's $35.40 and keep room for the higher figure until you confirm at the gate.
• Vehicle fees jump hard by weight class. The $40 plus VAT rate applies only up to 2,000 kg gross vehicle mass. Many safari-spec double-cab 4x4s sit above that line, which moves the fee to $150 plus VAT, more than three times as much, for the whole visit.
• Sleeping at any private lodge inside the park adds a hotel concession fee on top of the conservation fee, about $70.80 a day for two people in pure government charges before the lodge bill even starts.
• The Katavi-Mahale flight needs a minimum of four passengers to run on schedule. Two people travelling alone may face a wait for other bookings or a charter supplement rather than the quoted seat fare.
• There is no fuel inside the park at all. Mpanda is the last reliable pump, and it is also the most expensive of the three towns we checked, about 2 cents a litre above Mbeya or Tabora at September 2026 prices.
• The scheduled flight runs twice a week, Monday and Thursday, and only on that timetable from June to October; outside that window it operates on request. A missed connection in western Tanzania costs days, not hours.
• "Full Board Plus" and similar camp language does not automatically mean every activity is covered. Named extras on TANAPA's own tariff, such as the $50 per person night game drive, can still be billed separately even at a camp that sounds fully inclusive.
