Flights, roads and the train
How to get to Katavi National Park
Katavi is one of the hardest great parks in Africa to reach, and that is exactly why it is empty. There are two scheduled flights a week, both with Safari Air Link, or multi-day 4x4 drives from Mbeya or Tabora. Here is what actually runs in 2026, including what other guides get wrong.
By scheduled flight: two per week, and that is it
Safari Air Link operates the only scheduled service into Katavi, on its western circuit every Monday and Thursday. The outbound routing is Ruaha 07:00, arriving Katavi 08:40, continuing to Mahale; the return leaves Mahale, touches Katavi at 10:30 and lands back at Ruaha at 12:20 with onward connections to Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Nyerere and Mikumi the same day. The circuit operates 1 June to 31 October and on request from 1 November to 28 February, which matches the camps' seasons.
Flights land at Ikuu airstrip inside the park, and every camp includes the airstrip transfer. Baggage rules are strict and worth taking seriously: 23 kg per passenger total including hand luggage, in soft duffel bags only. No hard-shell or wheeled suitcases; bags must fit a pod 77.5 by 37 cm. Excess and photographic gear travel by quote at the airline's discretion.

Two things worth correcting
First, Auric Air. Countless websites list Auric Air as a way to reach Katavi. Their own current published schedule, valid to the end of 2026, contains no western-circuit destinations at all: no Katavi, no Mahale, no Kigoma, no Mpanda. Treat any itinerary built on an Auric Air scheduled flight to Katavi as outdated; whether they still fly charters on request is a question for the airline directly.
Second, Arusha. There is no scheduled flight from Arusha to Katavi. Safari Air Link does not serve Arusha at all; its northern strips are in the Serengeti and at Lake Manyara, and its north-to-south connector reaches Ruaha, Mikumi and Nyerere, not Katavi. Coming from a northern-circuit safari, you route via Ruaha or Dar es Salaam and pick up the Monday or Thursday western circuit there. The widely repeated fly Arusha to Katavi claim is wrong as stated.
By road: expedition-grade, and worth respecting
TANAPA's own guidance is blunt: access by road means long 4x4 drives from Mbeya, Kigoma or Tabora, and the main entry is through the Sitalike area. The park's northern section is bisected by the Mpanda to Sumbawanga road, with the main gate at Sitalike about 40 km south of Mpanda town.
The usual southern approach runs Mbeya to Sumbawanga to Mpanda, commonly cited at 550 to 700 km from Mbeya, and it is a multi-day undertaking, not a transfer. The eastern approach runs Tabora to Mpanda. TANAPA specifically warns about black cotton soil after rain, which can stop even capable vehicles, and advises overlanders to carry a satellite phone or radio.
- A high-clearance 4x4 is mandatory; TANAPA calls it essential, especially in the rains from November to May.
- Carry extra fuel, water, food and a spare tyre. There is no fuel inside the park.
- Mpanda is the last reliable fuel and resupply town; supply in Sitalike village is limited and unreliable.
- Off-road driving is restricted to protect the floodplains, and driving is daylight-only.
- Gates are cashless: pay by card or Tanzanian mobile money via the government payment gateway.
By rail and regional air
A railway branch line runs from Tabora to Mpanda and is used by budget travellers as the slow, cheap way into the region; from Mpanda you still need to arrange a vehicle for the last 40 km to Sitalike and for game drives beyond it. Mpanda Airport (MPA) serves the region, with seasonal and charter connections onward to Ikuu airstrip inside the park.
However you arrive, build slack into the plan. With two scheduled flights a week and long unpaved roads, a missed connection in western Tanzania is measured in days, not hours.
