Katavi in June: camps reopen, rates still at their lowest
June is a reopening, not a gradual ramp-up. On 1 June the camps that have sat empty since February switch back on, the Katuma begins its long retreat toward the shrunken pools that define the later dry season, and the floodplains, still green from the rains, start showing the first hints of the concentrations to come.

June is the value month: camps reopen fresh, prices sit at their lowest point of the year, and the landscape is still green rather than baked. Book early in the month to lock in shoulder pricing before it steps up mid-month.
The river starts its retreat
For the first time since February, Katavi records zero rainfall across the long-run average, and the Katuma begins pulling back from the flooded Katisunga and Chada plains toward the channel it will eventually shrink into. The land is still visibly green this early in the process, a look the September and October crowds never get to see, layered over the first real signs of game drawing back toward permanent water.
Buffalo herds start reforming into the larger groups that will pack onto drying mud later in the season, though June's numbers are still building rather than at their peak. It is an in-between month in the best sense: the wet season's quiet with the dry season's improving visibility.
Everything switches back on at once
Chada Katavi and Katavi Wildlife Camp both reopen on 1 June after the March-to-May closure, and Safari Air Link's scheduled western-circuit timetable resumes the same day, the first fixed departures on this route since October. After three months of nothing, June restores both the beds and the transport in a single stroke.
Pricing tells the clearest story of what June actually is. Chada Katavi charges $910 per person through June before stepping up to $1,190 from 15 June onward, and Katavi Wildlife Camp holds its lowest rate of the year, $445, through the whole month before rising to $575 in July.
One thing to do differently
Book for the first half of June specifically if the rate matters to you, since both flagship camps step up their pricing partway through the month rather than holding June-level rates for all thirty days. Given that camps have just reopened after three months dark, confirm room readiness and any post-closure operational notes directly with your camp rather than assuming everything runs exactly as it did the previous dry season.
