Katavi or Ruaha?

The two parks side by side on what you will see, what you can do, what it costs, how you get there and the health picture, with the facts behind every rating.

Our verdict

Katavi and Ruaha charge the same $35.40 entry and $47.20 vehicle fee, so the choice comes down to access and scale. Pick Ruaha if you want options: fly from Dar es Salaam or drive in from Iringa in 2 to 3 hours, camps at every level, 571 bird species and wild dog a good chance. Walking safaris and night game drives are both on its list. Pick Katavi if emptiness is the reward: game drives without another vehicle, buffalo guaranteed, and a park almost everyone flies into on the twice-weekly service, with almost nothing priced between camping and fly-in camps. Katavi's camps all close from March to May, as do most of Ruaha's, and both guides flag tsetse in the miombo woodland. The link is built in: Katavi's only scheduled flight leaves Ruaha on Mondays and Thursdays and lands at the Ikuu airstrip inside Katavi the same morning.

How the ratings work
  • Big game is calculated from each park's sightings table on its wildlife page: guaranteed counts 3, likely 2, a fair chance 1, rare 0.5 and absent 0, across elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hippo and giraffe, scaled so that 16 points is 5 out of 5. We do not rate or locate rhino anywhere in this guide network.
  • Birding follows the species count on the wildlife page. Low-budget safari follows the cheapest listed bed, the share of budget places and the daily park fee.
  • Walking, night drives, water, self-drive, families, first safari and wilderness are our ratings, whole numbers from 1 to 5. Press "Why?" on any row to read the facts each one rests on, with the page they come from. Where a rule is not published we say so rather than guess.
  • Prices are per person per night in US dollars as listed on the lodges pages, before park fees; the three-night totals come from each park's costs page and use the dated rates there. Fees are the international adult rate per day.
